Essays about confronting and moving on from loss, grief and shame.
I was born in Tembagapura, Indonesia and spent my formative years in Madrid, Cairo and Phoenix. Themes of belonging and loss and bodies have long been a part of my work. I'm compelled to give voice to common experiences that folks typically don’t want to talk about – probably because I had ulcerative colitis and suffered a bunch of miscarriages and wondered why people are so private about these commonly stigmatized "indignities"? Everybody poops and sooo many women experience natal loss, so I prefer to normalize talking about it instead of feeling isolated and ashamed.
I write creative non-fiction, plays and screenplays. I'm a Moth Story Slam winner and the creator and editor of SCOOP, a literary zine featured in the Fallen Fruit show at LACMA, “Let them Eat LACMA.” I'm a repeat performer at Mortified and have read my work at the West Hollywood Book Fair, Machine Project, RED CAT, and betalevel’s Errata Salon. I was a founding member of c-level and wrote for the critically acclaimed TV show, THE SHIELD. I earned a BA in Urban Studies from Vassar College and a MFA in Writing from the School of Critical Studies at Cal Arts. I'm into pit bulls, chatty cats and Iyengar yoga. I also love to paint and draw and collage and sometimes incorporate that work into my writing.
